World War 2 Stories for Sheffield

Message from the Prime Minister
...........and from Ed Miliband
The City of Nottingham was chosen to host  Armed Forces Day national event on Saturday 29 June 2013 . The Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force will put on a spectacular display for the city, which hosted the event to honour our Armed Forces past and present, offering a unique opportunity to see the Armed Forces up close.
Celebrations began on the day with a "feu du joie" - a "fire of joy" - by the guns of local unit 100 Regiment Royal Artillery from Nottingham Castle, as a spectacular tri-Service parade makes its way from the Castle to the Old Market Square for a Drumhead Service. Also involved in the procession will be horses and riders from the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, the world-famous ceremonial gun battery, on their first ever visit to Nottingham.

Topping off festivities in the city were flypasts by RAF aircraft, before afternoon celebrations commenced at Nottingham's Victoria Embankment park by the river Trent, including dynamic and exciting military displays from all three Services.
Nottingham pulled out all the stops to show its support for Armed Forces Day, dressing one of the city centre trams in Armed Forces Day livery, and hosting a Big Night Out on the Saturday evening with live entertainment, free and discounted activities, plus special food and drink offers across the City.

The City  also appointed Susan Dewey OBE to co-ordinate the involvement of veteran groups from right across the region to ensure they are well represented at this year's national event.

The Experience Nottinghamshire website contains details of hotels offering special rates for people attending the celebrations over the Armed Forces Day weekend.

The national event in Nottingham City is just one of many Armed Forces Day events taking place across the UK. To find out if an event is taking place in your area, please go to the Find Your Nearest Event page.
