Background to story: Army

This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Jo Thomas of the ‘Action Desk – Sheffield’ Team on behalf of Mr. J. Ellison.

I was married on the day I was called up for war service – September 2nd 1939. I never saw my wife until I came back from Dunkirk. We were the last ones to leave France after we had taken part in the Battle of Arras. We lost nearly all of our tanks. Then we were ordered to withdraw and got the last ship out of France.

I would also like to put the names of the people I knew when I was in the armed service and they are as follows:

From the 43rd Royal Tank Regiment when we were drafted to the B.E.F. in France, Trooper Stockdale, Trooper Roberson and Trooper Carver. The Officer who was in charge was Brigadier P.A.L. Vaux. The last time I saw the Brigadier was when I was presented to Her Majesty the Queen at Bovington Barracks in 1998. Now I am 91 years old.
